MetroidThe first installment of the immensely successful Metroid series introduces us to the hideous title creatures and the slick, cybernetic bounty hunter Samus Aran. As Samus, your mission is to penetrate the space pirates’ home planet, Zebes, and keep them from destroying the galaxy with the dangerous life forms known as Metroids. Metroid has all the high-tech weaponry, creepy tunnels and crawly alien creatures that anyone could ask for. With its deep and complex game play, excellent music and a rare sense of setting, it establishes a frightening ambience that will haunt and entertain you for a very long time.

    Sometimes, the Virtual Console releases games that we haven’t seen in a while, or perhaps never at all, and it’s a good deal to pay money for these games. Next week’s “Super Metroid” is a good example, having never been playable outside of the SNES (shy of emulators).

    Other times, the games are those that have been rereleased several times. This was the case when the VC released Zelda: OoT a while back. It’s a great game, but I already have two versions, both of which I acquired for free on the Gamecube. Now, with Metroid here, I see that they’re releasing these two Metroid games in anticipation of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, but it has been rereleased 3 times already, 2 of which are free parts of other games (it was included with Metroid Prime and Metroid: Zero Mission after beating the games, and as part of the Classic NES series for the GBA).

    Sure, it’s a great game, but if I want to play Metroid on the Wii, I’ll pop in my Metroid Prime disc and play away.

    Ah, Metroid. My brother bought a wii this weekend and it’s ironic he called me last night disappointed that a Metroid game isn’t on the Virtual Console. He’s gonna be happy.

    A true classic, I’ll be grabbing this one tonight.

    @Platypus Man

    While you are right, there are still people like myself who don’t own a Gamecube or any of the new hand-held systems. To tell the truth, the only systems I’ve personally owned are a NES (my brothers), Sega, a PS2, a PSP (which I ended up selling), and now the Wii. Though I have played the hell out of other systems because of friends that owned systems that I didn’t buy.

    But still, Nintendo is trying to make money here so I don’t really blame them.

    Oh, don’t get me wrong; I don’t blame Nintendo in the slightest for making money. I would do the exact same thing if I were in their shoes.

    However, now that you have a Wii, you should seriously play all those awesome Gamecube games that you missed out on. Metroid Prime, for one. And there is your NES Metroid…

    Yeah, I do plan to do that one day but as of right now I just don’t have the money to buy any of those games. I’m a student that is trying to find a part time job that is in some way related to my major, but once I get a job I’ll be spending a decent amount on Gamecube games that I never got to play.
